Your role and responsibilities
ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses. Plasma torch technology is poised to revolutionize industrial decarbonization by replacing traditional flame-based heating, boosting efficiency, and reducing CO₂ emissions in industries like cement, lime, glass, and pulp and paper, metallurgy, and ceramics. This thesis will identify key challenges and limitations in integrating plasma heating. It will assess potential solutions particularly focusing on control and automation area, exploring the technical, economic, and environmental benefits, providing insights for optimizing its industrial application. Details: • Start ASAP for a period of 5 months • 30 ECTS per student • 1-2 students • On site at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås – ABB may cover the accommodation Research topics: Investigate the key challenges and limitations of integrating plasma heating into high-temperature industrial processes. Assess potential solutions to enhance system efficiency and reliability, with a particular focus on control and automation. Goals: • Identify and evaluate the main challenges in implementing plasma heating in industrial settings • Develop and assess control and automation solutions • Provide strategic recommendations to improve plasma heating technology Approach: • Problem formulation & case study selection • Prior art review • Method, model & algorithm development • Analyze results and draw conclusions
Qualifications for the role
- Motivation to solve real world problems using state-of-the-art methods
- Background in chemical or energy engineering or similar
- Basic knowledge on Python or MATLAB
- Knowledge of heat and power
- Good interpersonal skills
