Postdoc in data-driven biomarker discovery

Aarhus Universitet (AU)

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of data-driven biomarker discovery as per 1 January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position for 2 years.

The department of Biomedicine prioritises diversity and a good work environment, as this is a prerequisite for groundbreaking research. In a diverse and international research environment, dedicated employees are looking to generate new knowledge within biomedical research areas such as infection and inflammation, membranes, neuroscience and personalised medicine. The Department of Biomedicine provides research-based teaching of the highest quality and is responsible for a large part of the medical degree programme. Academic staff contribute to the teaching. English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The department employs approx. 500 people from all over the world, and they make use of the department's modern laboratory-, core- and animal facilities. The Department of Biomedicine focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with business and industry, and numerous researchers from the department have established companies to develop new medicinal treatments founded in professional scientific basic research. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here. About the research project
Several minipig models such as the Göttingen minipig and genetically modified minipigs with humanized immune system have been used for drug safety assessment. However, knowledge on the applicability and translatability of these minipig models for new drug modalities are still limited, as minipigs are not often considered when choosing large animal models to perform pharmacology and toxicology studies. To refine the applicability and translatability of minipigs in pre-clinical safety studies of new drug modalities, this project will perform multiple-omics analysis of minipig tissues and organs from normal minipigs, genetically modified minipigs of type 1 diabetes, minipigs used in non-clinical safety studies. All these multi-omics data (including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) will be used to develop data-driven models for assessment and prediction of biomarkers for treatment effects and diseases in minipigs. Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc in data-driven biomarker discovery your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
  • Communication and coordination with collaborating partners from the research consortium for sample collection, processing, and archive.
  • Carry out large-scale RNA processing, high-throughput RNA sequencing libraries generation, and sequencing.
  • Integration of publicly available OMICS data from non-clinical safety studies conducted in pigs and other species.
  • Analysis of RNA sequencing data.
  • Development of data-driven biomarker assessment and translatability models, in collaboration of DL/ML scientists from the team.

You will report to the Professor Yonglun Luo. Your competences
You have academic qualifications at PhD level, for example within the following areas Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology Biochemistry, Molecular pharmacology or closely related disciplines.

We expect you to have:

  • Experience in genomics experiments and/or bioinformatics analysis.
  • Proficiency in single-cell and single-nuclei RNA sequencing, including sample handling, library preparation, and comprehensive data analysis.
  • Extensive cell culture experience including primary cells handling (e.g., endothelial cells, macrophages, lymphocytes, and/or fibroblasts)
  • Experience with working with animal models.
  • Other experimental skills probably cover cell-based assays, immunoassays biochemical, gene expression analyses and gene editing techniques.
  • A proven scientific track-record, a thorough understanding of omics data.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good work environment. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.
