At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Sustainability and Planning, Aalborg, a position as Postdoc in Satellite Data Assimilation for Large-scale Flood Prediction is open for appointment from 1 June 2025 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 13 months, with the possibility of extension.

The department was established in 1975. Today, we are located in two beautiful harbour-front locations in both Aalborg and Copenhagen. We have more than 250 employees and approximately 1,200 students across the two cities. Our research and study programmes are rooted in sustainability and the green transition. This means we conduct research in areas such as the circular economy, technology, urban, energy, and environmental planning, as well as sustainable transition and design. Sustainability is central to our work in environmental assessment and marine management. In surveying and land use, sustainability is reflected in our efforts in nature restoration and climate adaptation.
As society continues to develop digitally, we also focus on responsible technology development, addressing real-life challenges. Our problem-oriented approach and close collaboration with businesses and public organisations form the foundation of all our study programmes. Additionally, our engineering programmes are among the best in Europe.
Research area for this position will be within the scope of the Geodesy Research Group at the Department of Sustainability and Planning. The position is funded as part of the research project“Space-based Free Flood Awareness System for Africa”(SFAS) that is supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark(DFF). The main goal of this project is to understand coupling processes that lead to extreme hydrological events. The project also addresses challenges of developing high resolution large-scale combined flood inundation and water resources early warning especially in data sparse regions. Demonstrations of SFAS will be within the Niger River Basin, Africa. The task in this project is to setup and run the DHI-Global Hydrological Model and couple it with a 2D hydraulic flood inundation model. Then, multi-sensor satellite data assimilation and calibration algorithms will be developed to tune the coupled model in the Niger River Basin. The satellite data you will work with include Terrestrial Water Storage from GRACE and GRACE-FO missions; soil moisture remote sensing; and satellite altimetry. Qualification requirements
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
