At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.

This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

ABB Measurement & Analytics is a global leader in smart instrumentation and analysers, serving industrial and energy sectors with cutting-edge measurement solutions. With thousands of experts worldwide and a strong foundation in high-performance digital technologies, ABB is committed to helping customers operate more efficiently and profitably through precise and reliable data.

What will you do
Within the domain of Force Measurement, this thesis focuses on dimension sensors. The primary goal of this work is to construct a FEM multiphysics-model.

Background and Motivation
The thickness of a plate can be measured with high accuracy using the Pulsed Eddy Current technique (PEC). The method includes feeding a time-dependent current through an excitation coil at a distance from the plate which in turn gives rise to an electromagnetic field. As the field penetrates the plate, induced Eddy currents will ensue.

The energy of the penetrating field will dissipate through ohmic losses of these induced currents, and the reflected field is then detected using another coil where it induces a signal. From this signal, detailed information of the properties of the plate, i.e. the thickness and the electric resistance of the plate can be collected. The set-up described above thus constitutes a thickness sensor.

Construction of a multiphysics model of such a thickness sensor aims to improve the understanding of the underlying physics involved in the operation of the sensor and should allow for optimization of the data collection process.

Objectives/Content
The project includes:

a) Constructing a FEM multiphysics-model (using i.e. COMSOL) corresponding to the set-up described above

b) Adding to the model the electronics of the coil-systems by means of coupling a corresponding spice model to the FEM-model

c) Introducing geometric representations of the coil elements to determine 3D effects such as i.e. stray inductances

Who are you
This project is suitable for an M.Sc. thesis project (30 ECTS) for one student. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in multiphysics modelling and electromagnetics.
