Your role and responsibilities
In this role, you will help protect mission-critical industrial automation systems. As a Network & Cyber Security Trainee, you will learn how ABB secures complex OT/IT environments – from monitoring and incident response to vulnerability management and network hardening.
You will be part of a hands-on trainee program where learning by doing is at the core. We support and inspire you to step out of your comfort zone to develop not only your technical capabilities, but also your leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.
Your responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with advanced technology and knowledgeable professionals to create impactful and secure solutions.
- Learn by doing through hands-on rotations across network operations and security requirements within the business.
- Assist with vulnerability scanning, patch coordination, and reporting to relevant stakeholders.
- Support improvements of firewall policies, VPN configurations, and secure network architectures (LAN/WAN/SD-WAN, segmentation, Zero Trust principles).
- Contribute to playbooks and continuous improvement of security procedures in collaboration with Cyber Security Services and business stakeholders.
- Gain exposure to industrial control systems (ICS/OT) security and the unique risks within automation environments.
Program overview
For this particular position, you will be hired within the Local IS team, Division Process Automation, in Västerås, Sweden. You will be reporting to the Local IS Manager, Division Process Automation. The work model for this role is Onsite.
The trainee program consists of three assignments in different roles:
One nine-month assignment in your home country as an introduction to ABB and the business. One six-month international assignment to gain insight into ABB’s operations in a different environment, work with a new team, and expand your network. One nine-month assignment back in the home country, where you will deepen your functional expertise and business understanding.
Throughout the program, you will take part in a structured leadership competency development journey. During the final rotation, you will also start exploring your long-term role within ABB after the program ends. All program trainings are designed to build a strong foundation for your future career.
Your background
- Currently studying or recently graduated (preferably Master’s level) in Network Engineering, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Solid fundamentals in networking and systems: TCP/IP, routing and switching, DNS/DHCP, VPNs; basic Linux and Windows administration.
- Understanding of core cyber security principles such as threat modeling, least privilege, MFA, encryption, and secure configuration.
- A curious and analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills and an appreciation for documentation and structured processes.
- Strong communication skills and professional proficiency in English; Swedish is a plus.
- A global mindset, enjoying collaboration in diverse teams, with a drive to innovate, take ownership, and continuously improve.
