Postdoctoral Position in Cardiometabolic Health and Chronic Hepatitis B

Region Hovedstaden

We are seeking a highly motivated and dynamic postdoctoral researcher with a medical background and a PhD degree to take a leading role in a large clinical research project investigating cardiometabolic health in individuals with chronic hepatitis B. The postdoc will oversee clinical studies within the project and contribute to the initiation of new research projects at the interface between cardiometabolic and infectious diseases. The position includes co-supervision of PhD students and research fellows.

We are looking for a focused, goal-oriented, and constructive individual with a positive mindset who thrives in interdisciplinary collaboration and enjoys working with a diverse and multicultural patient population.

If this describes you, we offer a 4-year postdoctoral position with variable working hours at Clinical Research, Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC), with anticipated start date 1st of March

Clinical Research at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen
Clinical research at SDCC is based on human interventional and observational studies focusing on cardiometabolic diseases and their complications and comorbidities. Our research spans from detailed physiological studies in smaller cohorts to large-scale clinical studies. The overarching aim is prevention and improved management of cardiometabolic disease through a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms and development of effective pharmacological and lifestyle-based interventions.

The FitLiver Study
The FitLiver study is a multidisciplinary research project anchored at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen and conducted in close collaboration with the Department of Infectious Diseases at Hvidovre Hospital. The project investigates the relationship between chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and cardiometabolic health.

Emerging evidence suggests that chronic hepatitis B is associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The FitLiver study aims to characterize cardiometabolic risk profiles in individuals with and without chronic hepatitis B and to assess longitudinal changes over time.

Participants undergo comprehensive clinical phenotyping at baseline and follow-up, including assessments of liver status, lipid metabolism, body composition, coagulation and inflammatory markers, as well as metabolic and cardiac evaluations (including ECG and echocardiography). By generating detailed longitudinal cardiometabolic profiles, the project seeks to elucidate the complex interaction between chronic viral infection and cardiometabolic health, with the ultimate goal of improving prevention and clinical management strategies in this patient group.

Job Description
The responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher will, in short, include:

  • Assisting the Principal Investigator and co-investigators with the scientific conduct of clinical studies and supervision of sub-investigators
  • Active participation in clinical examinations and study visits
  • Scientific leadership and coordination of sub-studies within the FitLiver project
  • Initiation and development of new research projects at the intersection of cardiometabolic and infectious diseases
  • Participation in academic consortium activities, including protocol development, preparation of ethics committee and regulatory submissions, and contribution to manuscripts
  • Data interpretation and contribution to high-quality scientific publications
  • Co-supervision of PhD students, research fellows, and medical students

Required Qualifications
Applicants must have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Medical Doctor with a PhD degree and documented research experience within cardiometabolic disease, hepatology, infectious diseases, or related fields
  • Experience with initiation and conduct of clinical research projects; experience with interventional or longitudinal cohort studies is an advantage
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and regulatory frameworks for clinical research
  • Proven ability to present research findings at national and international scientific meetings
  • Strong analytical and scientific writing skills
  • Fluency in English, written and spoken; proficiency in Danish is highly desirable

Recruitment and Employment
An internal assessment committee will evaluate the applicants’ qualifications, and selected candidates will be invited for an interview. Employment will be in accordance with the collective agreements of the Capital Region of Denmark. The position is a 4-year postdoctoral appointment with variable working hours.
