Postdoc in Skin-Compliant Piezoelectric Sensors for Recording Biomechanical Signals in the Human Body - DTU Health Tech

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

We are looking for scientist to develop groundbreaking smart technologies and devices such as skin electronics and sensorized garments, to be applied to clinical and preclinical applications and trials. If you want to release your creative mind and combine it with practical lab skills this is the right opportunity for you.
Join us in developing the most sensitive and accurate piezoelectric skin sensors to record and monitor biomechanical signals in the human body from muscles, cardiovascular systems, and internal organs and correlate them with pathophysiological conditions and health status.

The research activity aims to explore and develop flexible piezoelectric materials, and to process them through micro and nanofabrication technologies to produce skin-compliant transducers, converting skin deformation and vibrations in electrical signals. You will join a laboratory with expertise in developing piezoelectric materials and device fabrication methods for sensors and actuators for the human body, working under the supervision of Prof. Massimo De Vittorio. You will be a part of the IDUN Center of Excellence, led by Prof. Anja Boisen at DTU Health Tech. IDUN is a highly cross-disciplinary research center with over 40 members, that focuses on development of micro and nanotechnology based sensors, detection systems and drug delivery devices.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be on the design, fabrication, and testing of devices such as flexible piezoelectric transducers based on inorganic aluminum nitride or biopolymers such as chitosan. You will work with academic, clinical, and industrial partners in Denmark and abroad.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Develop and optimize flexible piezoelectric thin films and device stacks with high piezoelectric properties.
  • Design and fabricate skin-compliant piezoelectric transducers and cooperate with team members to integrate them into compact electronic systems for readout and wireless communication.
  • Design the experiments to employ the piezoelectric sensors for clinical applications (also taking care of the ethical and authorization procedures for clinical and preclinical tests).
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects and be co-supervisor for PhD students.

The research activity will be carried out within the Center of Excellence – IDUN framework. In IDUN, our motto is ‘bringing science to life’ and we believe in openness, inclusiveness, having ambitions, making a difference and collaboration.

You will play a role mainly in the “Optomechanical Biointerfaces” research group coordinated by Prof. Massimo De Vittorio of the IDUN section, and you will interact with several members of IDUN working in different disciplines, such as biology, microfabrication, pharmaceutical science and material science. The project is highly interdisciplinary. We enjoy working together as a team and we hope you will contribute to fostering great teamwork as well.

Candidates should have:

  • A PhD in engineering, physics or chemistry with a strong experimental background in piezoelectric technology.
  • A documented track record in piezoelectrics and skin sensors.
  • A commitment to research, enthusiasm for working with research students, independence, and good communication skills.

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Relevance of background experience.
  • Enthusiasm for research and scientific discoveries.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
