PhD position in Machine Learning Techniques for Optical Frequency Comb Generation – DTU Electro
Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)
DTU Electro invites applications for a position as a PhD student in machine learning techniques for generation and optimization of optical frequency combs within the Villum Investigator program “Power efficient fiber-optic communication (POPCOM)”. The position is focused on developing novel generation strategies that result in combs exhibiting low noise behavior. The start date is 1 May 2025.
DTU Electro invites applications for a position as a PhD student for generation and stabilization of optical frequency combs. The position is focused on developing and implementing control protocols based on machine learning for flexible and ultra-fast generation of optical frequency combs based on various nonlinear platform. The overall objective is to realize frequency combs with flexible spectral shape profiles and minimum noise. The intended applications of the frequency combs will be realization of sensing network based on coherent optical time domain reflectometry. The start date is flexible, but preferably before 1 May 2025.
We seek a motivated, curious, and outgoing PhD candidate with a solid background in fiber-optics, machine learning, photonics, and communication engineering. Experience with application of machine learning to communication systems and experimental work is a plus.
The project goal is to neural network-based control algorithms that allow control of pump signals amplitude and phase, to generate combs with various properties. The project will cover both algorithm development as well as experimental implementations. Throughout the project, we will also into noise characterization and various approaches for its minimization.
We offer an opportunity to develop expertise in various domains, including but not limited to:
- Machine learning techniques for design and generation of optical frequency combs
- Development of advanced signal processing-based techniques for noise characterization.
- Realization of experimental procedures for test of the developed frameworks
- Building optical fibre sensing system employing developed combs
Responsibilities and qualifications you will take part in an educational program of 30 ECTS tailored to your needs on technical subjects, as well as on the “soft skills” needed for a successful career either in industry or academia.
Your tasks will include research into novel machine learning based control algorithms for ultra-fat and stable optical frequency combs generation. More specifically, the focus will be on fast and efficient modelling of various nonlinear platform for comb generations. Specifically, you will focus on the following areas:
- Data-driven modelling using multi-layer neural networks
- Model-free reinforcement learning for amplitude and phase control
- Experimental implementation of the developed techniques
- Phase noise characterization
- Maintenance of the GitHub repository for the developed code
- Organizing and managing joint experiments with the collaboration groups
You have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree and some international experience.
We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.
Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The period of employment is 3 years. The start date is flexible, but preferably before 1 May 2025.
