DTU Tenure Track Researcher in the field of applied spectroscopic sensing and chemometrics in energy production - DTU Offshore

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Danish Offshore Technology Centre (DTU Offshore), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for a researcher position in the field of spectroscopy and chemometrics applied to sensor development in energy production including petroleum, biofuels, blends with e-fuels and other forms of offshore energy production. The focus will be on analytical chemistry, advanced chemometrics and experimental research primarily on spectroscopic methodologies.

The candidate will primarily support the existing research projects at DTU Offshore, as an integrated part of the Produced Water Management program with a focus on monitoring control and environmental impact of oil and gas production in the Danish North Sea but with a mission to expand the area to biooils production and offshore usage, P-t-X and windfarm impact on marine environment. The emphasize will especially be on tackling problems associated with waste streams consisting of oily two phase dispersions.

In the longer term, the candidate will actively apply for external funding from public and private research funds to support new research within the scientific framework of DTU Offshore and build his/her own research group in the field of applied analytical chemistry and chemometrics within our strategic focus on technical solutions for environmental issues in the offshore energy sector.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your main activities will include:

  • Developing and conducting innovative experimental research on the development, optimization, application, and implementation of advanced analytical techniques for detection of oil-derived pollutants in produced water from the North Sea fields, in order to continue research activities of DTU Offshore within water management and environmental impact. This includes taking leadership of the analytical chemistry activities.
  • Expanding the application of existing methods and technologies developed at DTU Offshore to generate solutions for water management in renewable energy sources.
  • Conducting excellent research in analytical chemistry within research projects at DTU Offshore and publication of articles in international high-ranked journals.
  • Engaging with international industry and academic partners to foster projects and collaborations.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must hold a PhD degree in chemistry or related field with a focus on analytical chemistry as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a postdoc.
  • All candidates must have documented experience in conducting experimental research in the field of produced water and/or wastewater in particular the application to two-phase dispersion systems and the associated detection related challenges.
  • Proven expertise in advanced chemometric modeling (especially multi-way analysis) and programming in signal processing.
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience of experimental design and spectroscopic analyses, preferably fluorescence spectroscopy, and experience with both excellence and impact-oriented research, including private sector collaboration and public sector research is required.
  • Strong background in analytical chemistry, dispersions of crude oil or biooil and its contaminants in water, and a great knowledge of spectrometers hardware are highly desirable.
  • Candidates must have documented experience in project management skills.
  • Experience with fiber optics and flow-cell set-ups is desirable.

Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU. In addition, we expect you to be interested in collaboration and take personal responsibility for your work, and:

  • You are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments
  • You thrive on collaboration and teamwork
  • You have strong problem-solving abilities and excellent communication skills

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Research experience
  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. Read more about the program and the recruitment process here.
