Postdoc in Advanced characterization of sorbents for small-scale carbon capture - DTU Energy

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

You will help to strengthen the department´s competences within carbon capture and utilization (CCU) by developing solid sorbent materials for a thermal swing adsorption (TSA) process for capture of CO2 from biogas combustion. You will be a member of the Section for Applied Ceramics and Processing and work within an EUDP project (https://eudp.dk/en/node/17138) and together with close colleagues and academic and industrial partners.
If you are in the early stage of your career as scientists and your dream is to work on the development of novel materials and technologies for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), you find an ideal platform at here at DTU Energy for your ambitions.

A 1,5 year postdoc position in "Advanced characterization of sorbents for small-scale carbon capture” is available in the Department of Energy Conversion & Storage. The project is an industrial postdoc project, financed within an EUDP project and together with a Danish company (Welltec). The postdoc position is starting on the 1st of August 2025 (or after agreement) and will be under the supervision of Associate Professor Andreas Kaiser at DTU Energy and Satish Kumar at Welltec.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department´s competences within carbon capture and utilization (CCU) and to develop solid sorbents for a thermal swing adsorption (TSA) process for capture of CO2 from biogas combustion. You will be a member of the Section for Applied Ceramics and Processing and work within an EUDP project (https://eudp.dk/en/node/17138) together with academic and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Develop novel porous sorbent materials for post-combustion carbon capture, from, which have been sourced from external collaborators, suppliers or developed within a PhD project at DTU Energy.
  • Characterize the sorbents (such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), zeolites and activated carbons) by setting up and using advanced adsorption equipment.
  • Help to evaluate key performance parameters of the sorbents, such as working capacity, selectivity, regeneration efficiency and stability in a thermal swing adsorption process, eventually under realistic flue gas conditions, including gas impurities (H2O, NOx, SO2)
  • Regularly present your results to the industry partner and disseminate your results in high impact scientific articles and through participation in international conferences.
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects, and be co-supervisor for a PhD student

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy) focuses on the education, research and development of functional materials, components and systems, as well as their application in sustainable energy technologies. In a sustainable energy system, a large part of the energy will be supplied by fluctuating sources, such as wind and solar power. This makes it critical important to be able to convert and store the energy. Researchers at DTU Energy work with materials and technologies for direct conversion and storage of different form of energy, including electrolysis, carbon capture and utilization (CCU) and power to X technologies.

Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
